PhD: foam-flow cleaning of milking systems (FOAMAT)
Université de Caen Normandie (ABTE) offers a 36-month funded PhD in the FOAMAT project, testing foam flow as a lower-resource alternative to clean-in-place for milking systems. The work combines foam physical chemistry, millifluidic experiments and CFD modelling, with pilot trials alongside ACTALIA and Institut de l'Élevage, and starts on 1 January 2027.

Who can apply
Master's or engineering degree in process engineering, fluid mechanics, physical chemistry or related field
Review the original notice to confirm the requirements. Related degrees are not automatically equivalent; the recruiting organisation decides eligibility.
What you’ll do
- Help select surfactant formulations and measure foamability, bubble size, liquid fraction, drainage, stability and foam rheology
- Help design and instrument a foam generation and circulation rig and study bends, junctions and diameter changes
- Analyse flow-rate, pressure, imaging and local shear and conductivity data
- Develop CFD models in COMSOL Multiphysics with an effective foam rheology description and compare them with experiments
- Study removal of dairy residues and microbial contamination and analyse pilot trials with ACTALIA and on Idele's PiloTraite platform
- Compare water, energy and chemical use with conventional CIP over a full cleaning cycle
- Publish, present at conferences and contribute to technical recommendations for the dairy sector
What the employer asks for
- Master's or equivalent engineering degree in process engineering, fluid mechanics, physical chemistry or a closely related field (held or obtained before the start)
- Strong interest in experimental research, instrumentation and quantitative analysis
- Knowledge of fluid mechanics and physical chemistry
- Assets: rheology, multiphase systems, microfluidics or millifluidics; CFD and data processing with COMSOL, Python or MATLAB; microbiology or hygienic processing
- Scientific rigour, autonomy and ability to work across disciplines and partners
- English good enough to read literature and write publications
Pay, benefits and perks
- 36-month doctoral contract funded by the French CASDAR programme via FranceAgriMer
- Gross annual salary EUR 27,600
