Predoctoral position (BIOAQUAPEF): pulsed electric fields for alternative proteins from aquatic biomass
The University of Zaragoza is hiring one predoctoral researcher for the Interreg POCTEFA project BIOAQUAPEF, based at the Instituto Agroalimentario de Aragón. The project builds a cascade biorefinery that uses pulsed electric fields (PEF) to obtain alternative proteins and other biomolecules from microalgae and macroalgae, with a start date of 1 December 2026.

Master's degree or equivalent
Review the original notice to confirm the requirements. Related degrees are not automatically equivalent; the recruiting organisation decides eligibility.
What you’ll do
- Select microalgae and macroalgae and characterise them physiologically and molecularly, including microscopy and their response to physical treatments
- Develop and optimise a lab-scale PEF-based cascade biorefinery
- Characterise the extracts compositionally, molecularly and techno-functionally, including proteins and other industrially useful biomolecules
- Build mathematical models of permeabilisation, extraction or cell response kinetics under PEF
- Produce proteins and other biomolecules in quantities suitable for industrial applications
- Prepare reports and scientific articles
What the employer asks for
- Bachelor's degree in Food Science and Technology, Biotechnology, Biochemistry or a related field
- Master's degree in Food Quality, Safety and Technology, Molecular and Cellular Biology or a related field
- 1 to 4 years of research experience
- Merit for experience with effects of heat and PEF on microorganisms, advanced optical microscopy, mathematical modelling of microbial behaviour, protein isolation and identification (SDS-PAGE, Western blot) and proteomics or metabolomics
Selection process
- Merit-based assessment of documented CV merits submitted before the deadline
- CV (up to 40 points): academic record, research projects, publications, conference presentations and other merits
- Suitability for the position (up to 60 points): experience in PEF/heat effects on microbes (15), optical microscopy (10), microbial modelling (10), protein isolation and identification (15) and multi-omics (10)
- Up to 1.5 extra points for pregnancy, maternity or paternity leave in the last three years
- An interview may be held; minimum score of 70 points to pass
