Doctoral Candidate DC15 (MSCA FAroGels): interaction of aerogels with complex food media, experiments and modelling
Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH) is hiring a doctoral candidate within the EU FAroGels doctoral network. The project studies how food-grade aerogels swell, soak up liquid, soften or break down in syrups, oils, emulsions and sauces, and builds models that predict which aerogel suits which food application.

Master's degree (or equivalent) in process engineering with a focus on food technology, thermal separation processes or chemical engineering
Review the original notice to confirm the requirements. Related degrees are not automatically equivalent; the recruiting organisation decides eligibility.
What you’ll do
- Characterise aerogel surface and bulk properties (FTIR, NMR relaxometry, DSC/TGA, BET, rheology, dynamic sorption)
- Study real-time behaviour of aerogels in complex food media using optical and X-ray imaging, swelling tests, tribology and microfluidics
- Link structure, properties and function for stabilisation, controlled release, sensory effects and shelf life
- Build diffusion-sorption, continuum-mechanics, coarse-grained and data-driven predictive models
- Develop practical guidelines for choosing aerogels for food uses
- Complete secondments at METU (Turkey), Barilla (Italy) and Aerofybers (Spain)
- Work with other FAroGels doctoral candidates and partners and support undergraduate students
- Prepare reports, presentations and publications
