Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) Scientist-B 2027

The Bureau of Indian Standards recruits Scientist-B officers on their GATE score and an interview, with no written test of its own. Food Technology has been a discipline only in some cycles, most recently in 2020 through the Food Technology sections of GATE XE and XL.

Scientist-B is the entry Group A post (Pay Level 10) at the Bureau of Indian Standards, which writes Indian Standards and runs product certification, including for food products. BIS holds no written test for it: candidates are shortlisted on their GATE score in the paper matching their discipline and then interviewed, and the final merit is 85% GATE score and 15% interview. Food Technology is not offered every year. It was a discipline in 2020 (14 posts, using the Food Technology section of GATE XE or GATE XL) and in 2018 (5 posts, when BIS planned a written test that it cancelled); the 2022, 2023, 2024 and 2025 cycles had no food discipline. If you want this post, your preparation is GATE itself: practise with the GATE XL and GATE XE mocks on this site (see /exam/gate-xl and /exam/gate-xe) and watch bis.gov.in for an advertisement that lists Food Technology.

Who can apply

BIS shortlists Scientist-B candidates on a valid GATE score in the paper matching their discipline. The 2025 advertisement required at least 60% aggregate in the qualifying degree (50% for SC/ST) and an age of not more than 30 years. Food Technology candidates can apply only in a cycle that lists the discipline.

  • Degree: the qualifying degree in the advertised discipline with at least 60% aggregate (50% for SC/ST), per Advt 02(ScB)/2025
  • GATE: a valid score in the corresponding GATE paper; for Food Technology in 2020 this was GATE XE (section G, Food Technology) or GATE XL (section U, Food Technology), according to coaching-site reproductions of that advertisement
  • Age: 30 years maximum, with the usual relaxations (2025)
  • No application fee (2025)
  • Selection: 85% GATE score and 15% interview; no written test
