Log mean temperature difference LMTD

The logarithmic average of the temperature differences at each end of a heat exchanger, used because the difference varies along its length.

Real-life application

Used by process engineers sizing a heat exchanger for a dairy or juice plant, to work out how much heating surface is actually needed.
