Rajasthan FSO syllabus 2026

RPSC's FSO competitive exam is one 150-question objective paper. Rajasthan general knowledge makes up just over a quarter of it and the technical 'concerned subject' part makes up the rest. The technical part goes well beyond food technology: it has eight units that also cover chemistry, biochemistry, zoology and physiology, biotechnology and statistics, agriculture and livestock, which reflects how broad the FSO qualification is.

Exam pattern and marking

• Part A — General Knowledge of Rajasthan, 40 questions
• Part B — Concerned Subject, 110 questions
• 150 MCQs, 150 marks, one paper of 2 hours 30 minutes
• One-third of a question's marks deducted per wrong answer; marking multiple answers counts as wrong

Part A, Unit I: History, Culture and Heritage of Rajasthan

• Pre- and early history; Rajput dynasties and prominent rulers
• 19th-century socio-political awakening; 20th-century peasant, tribal and political movements; integration of Rajasthan
• Forts and temple architecture, sculpture and schools of painting
• Folk music, instruments, dance and drama
• Religious cults, saints and folk deities; dialects and Rajasthani literature

Part A, Unit II: Geography, Natural Resources and Socio-Economic Development of Rajasthan

• Physical features, rivers and lakes, climate and agro-climatic regions, soils, forests, demography
• Desertification, drought and flood, deforestation, pollution and ecological concerns
• Metallic and non-metallic minerals; renewable and non-renewable power
• Agro-based industries (textile, sugar, paper, vegetable oil), poverty and unemployment, agro food parks

Part A, Unit III: Current Events and Issues of Rajasthan and India

• Important persons, places and current events of the state; national and international events
• Organisations — BIS, ICMR, ICAR, APEDA, Export Inspection Council, FAO, WHO, ISO, WTO and others
• Recent welfare and development schemes of Rajasthan

Part B, Unit I: Chemistry

• Bonding, pH and buffers, thermochemistry, equilibrium, kinetics
• Hydrocarbons and aromaticity; alcohols, phenols, aldehydes, ketones, acids, nitro compounds, amines
• Purification and qualitative/quantitative analysis
• Solutions, surface tension, viscosity; adsorption, catalysis, colloids and suspensions

Part B, Unit II: Food Microbiology and Fermentation

• Food-associated microorganisms, their structure and growth factors
• Microbiological standards, sources of contamination, key spoilage organisms
• Fermentation types, food-grade microbes, dairy fermentation
• Manufacture of vinegar, sauerkraut, soy sauce, beer, wine and traditional Indian fermented foods

Part B, Unit III: Biochemistry and Toxicology

• Carbohydrates, proteins, lipids and nucleic acids — classification, structure, biosynthesis, metabolism, calorific value
• Enzymes — classification, kinetics, controlling factors, processing enzymes, endogenous enzyme effects
• Vitamins and minerals and their roles
• Plant alkaloids; plant and animal toxins; metabolism of pesticides, metals and additives

Part B, Unit IV: Biology and Human Physiology

• Five-kingdom classification to phylum; plant and animal foods; culture of food animals
• Cell types, tissues and organs
• Digestion, respiration, excretion, circulation, nervous, muscular, reproductive, endocrine and immune systems
• Deficiency, communicable and parasite-borne diseases

Part B, Unit V: Biotechnology and Statistics

• GM plants and animals and GM crops; plant and animal tissue culture
• Environmental biotechnology — pollutants, biomagnification, bioremediation
• Mean, median, mode, standard deviation, regression, correlation, t-test, variance, chi-square

Part B, Unit VI: Agriculture (Rajasthan focus)

• Salient features of Rajasthan agriculture; soil fertility and problem soils
• Dryland farming and agroforestry
• Field crops (wheat, mustard, groundnut, pulses, bajra, maize), horticultural crops, spices and medicinal crops
• Major crop diseases and pests; agricultural marketing; seed science and crop physiology

Part B, Unit VII: Livestock and Dairy

• Livestock in Rajasthan's economy; livestock and poultry production
• Artificial insemination, pregnant-animal care, diagnostics and major diseases
• Milk production and quality, processing and packaging, dairy equipment
• Introduction to livestock products

Part B, Unit VIII: Food Technology, Food Law and Hygiene

• Status of food technology in India and Rajasthan; preservation and processing methods
• Post-harvest physiology and handling of fruits and vegetables; squash, jelly, sauce, pickles
• Packaging materials for fresh and processed food
• Food laws — FPO, PFA Act, FSS Act, food safety testing, AGMARK
• Hygiene and sanitation — HACCP, GMP, GLP
